A Meme in Which I Get to Rave About Myself

Stolen from [info]rosa_acicularis.

What's the last thing you wrote?

Depending on what type of writing you're talking about, a very boring discovery deficiency letter for work, or a fun, fabulous ficlet.

Was it any good?

The deficiency letter was, you know, a deficiency letter. Does it sound like it was any good? The ficlet was awesome. Because, you know, I think everything I write is awesome.

What's the first thing you ever wrote that you still have?

When I was around 7 or 8, I wrote a romantic suspense short story about squirrels. Yes. There was espionage involved. I typed it on this ancient typewriter. My grandfather loved this story and saved it, and we still have it somewhere.

Write poetry?

I have but I'm not good at it, and I find I've grown out of it.

Angsty poetry?

Sometimes.

Most fun character you ever wrote?

Brem, I think. He's a joy to write. And a guy called Riley O'Hare who was the hero of, like, the second or third novel I ever wrote and who still has my heart in his teeth. Too bad "Buffy" went and named Stupid Boyfriend of Boring Riley.

Most annoying character you ever wrote?

I try not to write annoying characters. I couldn't handle it if I didn't like my characters. (Maybe this is why my novels always lack plot.) So hopefully I haven't written any massively annoying characters. Maybe this character called Maxie in a novel I wrote who was mean to her poor, beleaguered sister. And, um, Martha. I can only write her in tiny doses, because, well, otherwise things get nasty.

Best plot you ever wrote?

Hahahahahaha! I don't do plots. "Chaos Theory," because the plot was written for me (thanks, Rusty!).

Coolest plot twist you ever wrote?

See above re: plots. Maybe tossing DD into my fluffy fic in the first place.

How often do you get writer's block?

Very, very seldom. Almost never. I'm so lucky that way.

How do you fix it?

Usually I just make myself keep typing words until I find it again. Or I take a bubble bath and plot in my head until I work it out.

Do you type or write by hand?

I never write by hand. Almost anything. Three years of law school and a bar exam destroyed my ability to write. Under very dire circumstances, I have handwritten something, but I really hate it. I don't type fast enough for me; I definitely don't write fast enough for me. I tend to write in my head first, and then commit it to the laptop when I get home. (Church? Best place to write in one's head. Shut up.)

Do you save everything you write?

Well, yes. I think everything I write is absolutely brilliant all the time...

Do you ever go back to an old idea long after you abandoned it?

I seldom abandon ideas. I've done it only a few times, and I don't consider it "abandonment," I consider it putting it on hold. I always intend to go back when I figure it out. (Actually, Brem had a line to Martha that I abandoned because it was too mean and a bit unfair. The problem there was the authorial voice leaking in.)

What's your favorite thing that you've written?

I love everything I've written, except for the very, very early stuff. I almost always read over my stuff and go, "Aw, I love that!" It's truly impossible for me to choose.

What's everyone else's favorite thing that you've written?

Heh. Well, everyone else has really only read "Chaos Theory." I think  [info]bouncy_castle79is the only person to read my entire oeuvre. So you'd have to ask her.

Do you ever show people your work?

Fanfiction? Obviously. The rest of it? Yes. Although I didn't share with my family for a very long time. You don't want your father to discuss how you write a sex scene with you. Trust me.

Who's your favorite constructive critic?

[info]bouncy_castle79does it as only as a best friend can: by laughing in my face whenever I do something ridiculous. Hopefully she will agree that I do fewer ridiculous things than I used to. I have learned more about the craft of writing in the year I've worked with  [info]jlrpuckthan I could have learned in ten creative writing courses. And Kristin has taught me the value of a good brainstorming session.

Did you ever write a novel?

Oh, many, many, many. 12? 13? Maybe a bit more? No, maybe that's right. I honestly lose count...

Have you ever written fantasy, sci-fi, or horror?

I guess I try...But I think I'm pretty much a straight romance author, no matter how much I may attempt otherwise.

Ever written romance or teen angsty drama?

Teen angsty? No. But romance? Is my bread and butter. (It's my place of business, to paraphrase the immortal Josh Lyman.)

What's one genre you have never written, and probably never will?

Horror.

How many writing projects are you working on right now?

Wow. I actually have two works in progress at the moment! That's a lot for me. I usually finish before starting the next one. Oh, and an unfinished ficlet. And a ficathon prompt to figure out.

Do you want to write for a living?

Yes. Any time now, that'd be great.

Have you ever written something for a magazine or newspaper?

Does the high school newspaper count?

Have you ever won an award for your writing?

No. I feel this is unacceptable. (Well, I won a couple of scholarships based on essays. Does that count?)

Ever written something in script or play format?

Weirdly, since I'm all about dialogue, no. I'm not good at restrictive formats. This is why I've got an omniscient narration all the time.

What is your favorite word?

I don't have one. Probably "Huh?" Because I find myself saying it at work all the time.

Do you ever write based on yourself?

Actually, not really.  I may throw an inside joke into a conversation, and I name characters after my friends, but I don't show up much in my own work.

Which of your characters most resembles you?

In one novel I wrote called "Sunny Days," the heroine was a lawyer who hated her job and had a sister with bad taste in boyfriends. She fell in love with a famously sexy man known for a messy hairstyle who had to wear reading glasses. This was written long before I knew David Tennant. Also long before I actually became a lawyer who hated her job.

Where do you get ideas for your characters?

I've no idea. They just...happen.

Do you ever write based on your dreams?

All the time. Very, very frequently.

Do you prefer happy endings, sad endings, or cliff-hangers?

Happy. I have a policy against sad endings in fiction.

Have you ever written anything based on an artwork you've seen?

Hmm. No. Interesting.

Are you concerned with spelling and grammar as you write?

I...don't know how to write while not caring about spelling or grammar. I...don't know how one would do that. (Except when I'm drunk. Then spelling goes out the window. But I don't tend to write while drunk.)

Ever write something entirely in chatspeak?

I don't even use chatspeak on chat.

Does music help you write?

Yes. I always write with appropriate music on. The music I would score the scene with.

Are people surprised and confused when they find out you write well?

I've...no idea, honestly. I think they'd probably be surprised to find out that I write such fluff.

Quote something you've written:

A passage chosen at random from a novel chosen at random:

“No. Apparently Michael told Geoff he wasn’t fun enough to be on the Committee.”

Vivvie drew her eyebrows together. “And Michael thought you were fun enough to be on the Committee?”

“Hey.” Morgan was offended. “I’m tons of fun.”

“Well, I know that, but you haven’t slept with Michael, now have you?”

Yes, that was quite a fabulous ficlet, you little genius, you! I don't know why I think it's charming when you go on about your awesomeness, whereas I want to defenestrate anyone else who talks like that.

WHERE is this angsty poetry? And WHEN can I read it? It's been ages since I had a good laugh. Wait, that was one of those mean comments you're always accusing me of making, isn't it? Well, I will agree with you that you do much fewer ridiculous things. In fact, we're down to almost none!

As far as abandoned ideas, didn't you want to write a novel once where the plot was something about cloning? And I stared at you for like thirty seconds, because your knowledge of science was so small that you used to ask me if it was possible for whatever ailment you were suffering from that week to make you die in your sleep? Now look at you, writing about fission equations! Man, how did we survive before Wiki?

Also, your most annoying character was the chick that Riley married out of pity. What was her name... Morgan? She was so disgustingly good and virtuous! Of course, that made Caroline look that much more awesome in comparison.

And I don't know why you think you can't do plot! All of your novels have a plot!

"I don't know why I think it's charming when you go on about your awesomeness"

It's charming because of how awesome I am.

"WHERE is this angsty poetry?"

Oh, I've really no idea...It was all written in random notebooks in high school.

"Wait, that was one of those mean comments you're always accusing me of making, isn't it? Well, I will agree with you that you do much fewer ridiculous things. In fact, we're down to almost none!"

Growth is a very good thing.

"didn't you want to write a novel once where the plot was something about cloning?"

Hahahahaha! Yes! I'd forgotten about that! Then I think I switched it to have to do with art thieves, but I never wrote it. I remember the heroine's name was Devereaux. I was obsessed with that.

"Man, how did we survive before Wiki?"

God, remember what a pain it was for me to write? I had to always just make things up because of my intense laziness.

"Also, your most annoying character was the chick that Riley married out of pity. What was her name... Morgan? She was so disgustingly good and virtuous! Of course, that made Caroline look that much more awesome in comparison."

Monroe was her name. And now I'm remembering how I grew so bored with her that I forgot to write about her funeral, remember? Ah, such good times, that college writing...

"And I don't know why you think you can't do plot! All of your novels have a plot!"

I got this from you, you lunatic! You told me my novels didn't have plots, so now I'm constantly trying to come up with one!

I see what you did there.

Monroe! Yes! I remember reading about her death, then there's all this dealing with Riley's daughter, and then Riley and Caroline are together, and I was all, "Ummm, did you ever bury Monroe? Where, exactly, is she?"

Shockingly, I do not remember the no plot thing. Why did I say that? There was plenty of plot in my romance novel. Uh, that would be the romance novel with the Mafia boss named after me, not one I wrote.

Yes! And you forced me to write her funeral! Which ended up being something like, "It was a rainy day. Riley didn't bring Charity. They buried Monroe."

"Why did I say that?"

It was early on. Very, very early on. Indeed, before your novel, I believe.

Indeed. In the current chapter, in fact.

Thank you!!

"I'd love to read more of your oeuve. Wow, I knew you'd written novels, but not so many. Just...WOW. *impressed*"

I think this is part of the reason why I spend so much time freaking about having "free" time. Because I split my free time between genuine free time, when you do things like errands and meeting friends and watching TV and reading books, and free time when I get to write. And the first novel felt like an enormous mountain to climb, but once you get that first one out of the way, it turns out they just kind of click along. I really, really, really am working on a website for my actual fictional fiction, which I'll have to share with everyone as soon as I get it up and running (I'm working on it, arctacuda! I promise!).

When he left the room she went in to peek at what book was so well written, only to discover that it was a book he had written himself.
